About Moral Injury
Moral Injury is an invisible injury against the conscience. Though it commonly results from “bads we commit” and “goods we omit,” the conscience is far more complex that just “right and wrong,” black and white. Life exists in shades of gray.
Sometimes, Moral Injury results from things done to us (i.e., the victim of abuse, theft, etc.). It sometimes results from not being present when something bad occurs to someone else (i.e., survivor’s guilt). And, it can arise when “bad outcomes” occur without provocation (i.e., training accidents).
Moral Injury frequently happens when heroes must do things that are “out of character” for them but necessary in the line of duty (i.e., firing a weapon). Even when they kill or injure another human for the sake of the greater good (i.e., to save lives), the conscience can still weigh them down.
Moral Injury differs from PTSD in that it is not a response to external events that “trigger” the person in real time. Though external events originally created the circumstance that caused the injury, the events become internalized in the form of guilt and shame— not fight or flight.
The key to determine “which one” is to evaluate is it coming from “out there” (i.e., a misperception of something in the present, being interpreted in light of past experience) or it it coming from “in here” (the conscience). To be clear, Moral Injury occurs because of past external events, but they’ve become internalized based on what you believe about the ethics of them.
